My philosophy about sleep is aligned with The Sleep Sense™ Method created by Dana Obleman. The Sleep Sense Method was created out a strong belief that healthy sleep habits make for healthy children. A well-rested child is curious, energetic, happy, playful and eager to learn. When parents entrust me as their child’s “sleep guide,” either through consultations or seminars, they are placing a great deal of trust in me, and it is important that you know I take this responsibility very seriously.
The Sleep Sense Method places emphasis on accommodating different parenting styles. While most books and programs dealing with child sleep take philosophical stands, often based largely around the issue of “crying it out, “ I believe that your child’s sleep is more important than my personal views on the subject. I will speak with you and learn about your parenting style and discuss what your priorities are for your child’s sleep. It is very important that you, as a parent, are comfortable with your new sleep plan in order for it to work for your child.
My approach to improving your child’s sleep is as follows:
A little note about crying:
Most people ask me about whether my strategies involve “crying it out,” and I am always glad they ask as I feel it is something that is important to address.
Infant and Children have a very limited ability to communicate and crying is your child’s way of protesting change, and you can expect that making changes (although for the positive) will result in some protest. That’s why I am sure to always discuss with parents that my program (sleep plan) will most likely involve at least some amount of protest on the child’s part.
Please understand that I will never ask you to leave your child to cry alone, nor will I ask you to leave and ignore their cries. The reason that the Sleep Sense Method is so successful is that it lets us collaborate to develop a plan that you feel comfortable with based on what you know about your child.
